Instructor Spotlight Questions
Day 1: We are excited to announce that we are going to start highlighting our instructors. This month we will be spotlighting Lieutenant Bobby Magee, of the Ocean City, MD, Fire Department. Bobby started in the fire service in 1988. During his time in the fire service, he has served the Millville, DE, Volunteer Fire Company, Sussex County EMS, and the Ocean City Fire Department. Bobby has been a firefighter all the way up to Fire Chief, a Paramedic and supervisor with SCEMS, and is currently a Lieutenant with Ocean City. Bobby also served in the U.S. Navy.
Day 2: Bobby Magee's inspiration for being an instructor and advancing his knowledge of the fire service is one of his mentors, Doug Scott. Doug was the Fire Chief of Millville Volunteer Fire Company when Bobby first joined Millville. Bobby also credits Eric and Steve Huovinen for pushing Bobby to take as many classes as he could as quickly as he could. This jump started Bobby's desire to learn. As Bobby completed the courses offered through the State Fire School, he began to look for other opportunities for training. Bobby started reading Fire Engineering and books on Hose Stream Management. Bobby credits the article published in Fire Engineering from Fairfax County about the differences in smooth bore nozzles versus combination nozzles. This was the start of Bobby being more analytical about everything in the fire service. The more he learned the more he wanted to learn how things work and that would effect fireground operations.
Day 3: Bobby credits Doug Scott, current Deputy Chief of Millville Volunteer Company and current Battalion Chief of Ocean City, MD, Fire Department. Bobby said that Chief Scott was always a very positive leader. Bobby said, Chief Scott would give just as much praise as he did criticism. Chief Scott pushed members to get as many training opportunities as they could. Bobby also credits Chief Trevor Steedman, Chief Mike Lombardo, and Lt. Ray McCormack as mentors of his.
Day 4: We spoke to Lt. Magee about is what is the most fulfilling thing about being an instructor. Bobby said he truly enjoys helping people get better. Being able to see someone learn a skill or concept and see them grasp it is a great feeling. Bobby says a deep and dirty secret of instructing is that it is the last phase of learning. It is one thing to learn to be able to do a skill, it is completely different to be able to break that skill down and teach it to 10 other people so they can do it. In his 26 years of teaching, his favorite thing about teaching is hearing from people from classes and hearing their success stories of skills they learned in class with Bobby. Thank you Bobby, you are great instructor and we appreciate everything you do for Strike the Box Training!
Day 5: Lt. Bobby Magee's Spotlight we are going to see what advice Bobby has for new members of the fire service. Bobby said new members should practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more. Practice until you get it perfect. Learn as much as you can, in quality increments. Don't worry about quantity, learn quality, stuff that works. Try it and figure out what works for you.
Day 6: Lt. Magee we find out what Bobby likes to do in his free time. Bobby truly enjoys spending time with his family and friends and traveling. He also enjoys staying in shape, martial arts, weight training, running and generally being active.
