Strike the Box Training is selected again to instruct at the "World's Largest Firefighter Training Conference"
FDIC International 2019
Indianapolis, Indiana

STBT'S TREVOR STEEDMAN IS RETURNING AS A FEATURED CLASSROOM SESSION INSTRUCTOR/SPEAKER, PRESENTING STBT'S ORIGINAL PROGRAM "SCBA BOOTCAMP: A FIREFIGHTER'S SURVIVAL SCHOOL."
APRIL 11, 2019
1:30 PM - 3:15 PM
ROOM 238-239
INDIANA CONVENTION CENTER

As part of Strike the Box Training's SCBA Bootcamp ® , we instill and emphasize a series of potentially life-saving practices and techniques we've termed as the Continuum of Survival ® . One such technique is the "Kick & Crawl" method of self-extrication.  When a firefighter falls through a floor, their means of escape/rescue may be very limited due to a lack of points of egress or ability to reach or use them.  Inaccessible or absent windows and unstable stairs may further complicate the issue.  Firefighter rescue drills such as the Nance and Denver Drills focus on removing the unconscious or incapacitated firefighter.  However, AFTER sounding the MAYDAY, the firefighter that is conscious and uninjured or minimally hurt has the capability of beginning self-rescue efforts prior to the assembly, deployment and arrival of personnel and equipment designated for that purpose.

Any tactic or technique we use on the fireground carries an inherent risk that's weighed against the probability of a desired outcome.  The Kick & Crawl method is no different - it has pros & cons,  capabilities and limitations.

(NOTE: This is a survival technique - Yes, it is risky and potentially dangerous!  - But, it beats the alternative)

Capabilities & Limitations:
  • Firefighter must be conscious and relatively uninjured
  • Limited to use on bulkheads made of drywall/gypsum board,  paneling, light plaster & lath or similar materials
  • No specialized tools or equipment are required - just hands & feet
How it works: (video clip below)
  •  Using a tool, hands or feet, the firefighter   quickly creates hand/foot holds in the wall while ascending.
  • Firefighter "Kicks & Crawls" to where he/she can reach a landing, breach to an adjoining room or climb to a means of escape
